Recently St Als Pain Management Center in Boise started drastically cutting back the medications of hundreds of pain patients. After 7 years of being treated at St Als, my brother was told his doctor had left (was forced to resign) and that he would have to see a different doctor within the St Als system.

He was referred to Dr Collins in Nampa. The first visit went very well, however, the doctor told my brother that after 7 years on the same meds, they were going to have to slowly reduce the amount he was taking. At this time, my brother was using a 100mg fentynal patch and taking oxycodone 30mg 4 times a day for breakthrough pain. The doc assured my brother that the reduction would be very gradual, and only affect one med at a time.

Well the the next appointment was scheduled with dr Collins assistant Thomas Rambow, a PA. This guy was anything but helpful. He was not the least bit interested in my brothers well being, and was riding his soapbox on anti opiate rhetoric. He told my brother that he does not believe in opiate treatment and would not continue to refill his meds.

He proceeded to cut all his pain meds by 25%, and would continue to do so until he was not taking anything. After the first reduction, the second becomes a 33.3% reduction, then the next becomes a 50% reduction. This has been torture for my brother. The problem we have is that after 7yrs of loading him up on these meds, they were all of the sudden dropping him drastically without any consideration as to how this would affect his quality of life.

Needless to say, withdrawal symptoms aside, this is the sickest he has been in over 7 years. The pain is so intolerable that most days he doesnt get out of bed.

Apparently, my brother is one of hundreds of patients that are St Als patients who are facing the same torture. If you, or someone you care about are reffered to Dr Rambow, I would run in the opposite direction.
